5 fun facts about St Paddy’s Day

1. Why 17th March? This date marks the saint’s death, he is buried in County Down.
2. When was the first parade? This actually took place in Boston (US) in 1737. Ireland’s
first parade was in 1903.
3. Was St Patrick Irish? No, he was thought to originally come from Wales or Scotland.
4. Why do we wear green? This colour is actually synonymous with Irish pride but up until
19th century the colour associated with St Patrick was actually blue.
5. Why is St Patrick associated with shamrocks? According to legend, the saint used the
shamrock as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he first introduced Christianity to
Ireland.
