Why test my animal?
I am sure you are wondering why it is beneficial to regularly get your animals tested rather than treat them frequently.
Parasites can easily start to build a resistance to chemical components within wormers and other treatment methods. Regularly checking your animals for parasites can slow the resistance and prolong the life of the treatment methods, making them more effective! Similar to antibiotics used for humans, the more we use them the less effective they become! Eventually, this can save you money that you would normally spend on treatment, plus why treat when there is nothing to treat?

Pasture Larval Count Test
Do you want to see if your pastures are clean as well as your animals? We can do this for you! This test will help to manage your pasture and thus prevent your animals from accumulating parasites from your pastures. This can be a one-off sample or we can monitor it at intervals through the grazing season.
Price (including VAT): £120.10 per test for 1-4 samples, £110.10 per test for 5+ samples.

Worm Egg Count Reduction Test
This test is similar to a standard worm egg count. However, it is beneficial if you think you have a resistance problem or wish to confirm that treatment remains effective. We will examine a sample before you worm, and then a sample 10 to 14 days after you have wormed to determine whether the wormer has worked.
Price (including VAT): £16.10 per test for 1-4 samples, £13.40 per test for 5+ samples.

Worm Egg Count Test
This test will look at your animal’s faecal sample under a microscope and determine the number of eggs from adult worms within your animal’s intestinal tract. It will help identify whether you need to worm.

Liver & Rumen Fluke Count Test
Liver and Rumen Fluke eggs are a lot denser than normal intestinal worm eggs therefore a different test has to be conducted to identify these parasites. These are very common within livestock animals such as sheep and cows, however liver fluke can affect all animals including humans. For more information follow this link: https://www.nadis.org.uk/

Lungworm Test
This test is known as a Baermann Test in which the lungworm larvae are encouraged to emerge from your animal’s faeces; the sample is then examined microscopically. They are common in cattle (notice your cattle coughing), donkeys and dogs (especially if they eat slugs or snails).

Parasite ID Test
This test is used to identify ectoparasites (live on the outside of the animal), such as fleas, ticks, lice and mites. If you are concerned about something you found near or on your animal, we can examine it under a microscope!

Coccidia
This parasite lives on the wall of your animal’s intestine and often infects younger animals but can also be found in older animals. There are different species of this parasite and identifying which species your animal has can help with treatment and prevention! They are transmitted in faeces so we can do a count to identify if your animal has a high, medium or low infection – please see worm egg count for price. For speciation, please contact us at lab@ridgewayresearch.co.uk for a quote – prices start from £100 per sample. Please note the turnaround time for the results of this test is approximately 7 days.
