The World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) is a non-profit organization and is the largest international veterinary parasitology organization in the world. The purpose of the WAAVP is to encourage research and promote information and material exchange among researchers, animal health investigators, and veterinary practitioners.
Honorary membership of the WAAVP was first awarded in 1967 and this has continued ever since, however 2019 was a first for WAAVP as it saw its first 3 women awarded honorary membership. Those who are chosen to become honorary members of the WAAVP have been recognized for their distinguished contribution to the advancement of veterinary parasitology. Maggie Fisher was awarded honorary membership at WAAVP 2023 in Chennai, making her the 4th woman to be awarded honorary membership.
“Parasites; Global Impacts, Local Solutions” was the theme of the WAAVP 2023 conference that Maggie attended in Chennai, India. It focused particularly on the effect and impact of parasites on the health and production of livestock, companion animals, poultry and wild animals. Along with sharing her own knowledge and gaining a lot of information from the 29th international conference of the WAAVP, it gave her a small opportunity to see a tiny part of Indian culture.
