Identifying mite infections in livestock

What they are

Mites are small arthropods – invertebrate animals – that can affect different parts of an animal’s body. They most commonly cause problems in livestock in autumn through to early spring when animals are intensively housed together.

The harm mites cause

Symptoms of infection include:

  • Itching
  • Thickened, scaly skin
  • Hair loss
  • Reduced productivity
  • Dermatitis (inflammation of the skin)
  • Bacterial infections as a result of scratching the skin

How to control mites

The best way to control mites is through the use of insecticides. These come in a variety of forms including pour-ons, sprays, powders, injections and drops.

However, to treat the problem effectively it is important to identify the specific species of mite. This is because not all drugs are effective for all mites.

In order to identify the mite species, you will need to take a deep skin scrape from your animal. We recommend you do this under guidance from your vet.

We identify mite species

We can identify the mite species you removed from your animal.

Our test kits include instructions on how take a sample, a guide to help you interpret the results and advice on what to do next.
